com).Poetic FarmgateThe Menu would like to congratulate Leanne O’Sullivan, just announced as Inaugural Winner of the Farmgate Market Café National Poetry Award, a new award exclusively for books by poets resident in Ireland and further evidence of a truly genuine commitment to the arts, most especially the written word, on the part of one of his most favourite of all restaurants.
Today’s specialEven a random roll-call of confected comestibles recently available on the Flour House bakery stall can move The Menu to tears of job: bouchons of almond & blueberry, lemon & poppyseed with lemon cream, triple chocolate and sticky toffee; raspberry crumble; quadruple chocolate brownie; spiced pastry apple pie, fruit flavoured with apple and lemon; he could go on but fears he may well end up eating the hands off himself, right up to the elbows and perhaps beyond. Neither is he the alone in revelling in the relatively recent arrival of Rebecca Mullen’s stall to Mahon Point Farmer’s Market where her range can often be sold out by as early as 11am, not least to canny fellow stallholders ensuring a little treat is laid away for later in the evening when day’s work is done.
Exceedingly delicious confections, all are fine exemplars of the pastry chef’s craft, technical chops married to an exceedingly fine palate with a penchant for the sweeter things in life, and The Menu found a triple-layered slice of Lemon Meringue Cake, three layers of chiffon, a sponge with the richness of added butter, a filling of raspberries and lemon curd-cream and the whole schemozzle finished off with Swiss meringue pretty much encapsulates why so many people in the know are heading off to the market earlier and earlier each week, they launched this light refreshing IPA in January — it is a refinement of a seasonal IPA they issued last year.
Made with 100% Irish malt and with a late addition of five hops (including Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe), this is aiming for a zero-dosage Champagne-style of beer. This pours a light clear gold colour, lighter than many lagers, but with pleasing aromas of citrus and pine.
Supremely refreshing and crisp with good dry hopped flavours and a lingering bitter crispness. Also watch in your local for the Black’s new draught Ultra Session 2.
