Over the past 70 years skateboarding has gone from fringe to mainstream. Iain Borden, author of Skateboarding and the City, selects 11 skateparks Iain Borden, author of Skateboarding and the City, selects 11 skateparks that highlight the key aspects of the movement’s culture.
“Skateboarding provides a different way of experiencing our buildings and spaces, suggesting that they can be a pleasure ground of play, energy and delight,” Borden, author of Skateboarding and the City: A Complete History and professor of architecture urban culture at the Bartlett, University College London told Dezeen.From its beginnings in 1960s California, skateboarding has grown to become an activity enjoyed in cities across the world.Skateparks are being built at a rapid rate and the sport is set to appear at the Olympics Games for the first time in 2020.”Skateparks are more than a type of sports facility””In 1980 the UK had less than 100 skateparks, and today it has over 2,000,” said Borden.
“This pattern is being repeated in just about every country worldwide, with more municipal authorities and community groups realising that skateparks are far more than just another type of sports facility, but a way to connect with and stimulate a much wider and richer urban life,” he continued.To mark the release of his book Borden has selected skateparks from around the world that show the history and variety of the sport.
“These 11 skateparks show the sheer diversity of contemporary skateboarding open to connections with heritage, health, community, an independent DIY spirit, art, commerce and innovative design. Skateboarding is increasingly plural, and so are the terrains on which it operates,” explained Borden.

Following the example set by Burnside in Oregon, hundreds of these DIY skateparks have sprung up worldwide. One of the best is FDR in Philadelphia, where since 1996 rebellious skaters have collaborated on a piratical paradise of rideable surfaces.

(WRBL)- Local artist and Columbus native, Bo Bartlett, received the 2019 South Arts State Fellowship award for Georgia.
The South Arts Southern Prize and State Fellowships celebrate and support the highest quality artistic work being created in the American South. Over 800 visual artists submitted their work this year for the fellowships.
Nine state fellows were selected for the award and will represent their state for the Southern Prize award. News 3 spoke with Bartlett about the award.
I feel sort of accountable to Georgia and responsible for being the representative from Georgia, said Bartlett. He also said that he was honored to receive the award and looked at it as an opportunity to celebrate all art.
The thing is about art is if you are competing in art then you dont really understand what art is all about, said Bartlett. Bartlett said that he gathered inspiration from living in Columbus and that many of his paintings are set in Midtown where he lived as a child.
He said there was a field not far from his home where he learned to appreciate time, nature and existence. Bartlett gives back to the community that helped inspire his art through several outreach programs with the homeless, those in the Muscogee County jail, and students in the Muscogee County School District.
Its about being in the community and not separating oneself, said Bartlett.He also said these programs are not so much about teaching others art as it is a chance for them to express themselves.
Bartlett encourages young artist who are trying to find their way through the creative process to trust their own instincts and intuition. As an artist you have to have many many many hours, years of believing in yourself when no one else is believing in you, said Bartlett.
Bartletts work will be on exhibit with the other eight State Fellows at the 701 Center for Contemporary Art in Columbia, South Carolina, from March 21 to May 5. The Southern Prize will be awarded to one of the finalists on April 15.
